Stage Seeland - Bernburg (Saale)
Coming from the Harz district, the R1 enters the Salzland district and first crosses the Harzer Seeland, an extensive nature and recreation area with a charming landscape and magnificent views. The name of the district refers to the mineral wealth of salt, which still characterizes the region today. Castles and courtyards, the stone witnesses along the Romanesque Road, imposing towns and dreamy villages make for lasting impressions.
Tour
From Hoym, the first district of the town of Seeland, the R1 follows the course of the Selke to Gatersleben and turns onto the newly designed promenade at Friedrichsaue, which runs along the northern shore of Lake Concordia. In addition to beautiful rest and viewing points, the ecological transformation of the former mining area can be seen at the cycle rest and information point near Schadeleben.
As an alternative to the main route via Neu Königsaue, we recommend a detour via Aschersleben, the oldest town in Saxony-Anhalt, which is known above all for its architectural diversity. Visit, for example, modern art by Neo Rauch in the Gartenträume parks or the almost completely preserved town fortifications.
At Neu Königsaue, the R1 leaves the Harz lake district, bypasses the town of Hecklingen with its Basilica of St. George and St. Pancratius visible from afar and leads behind Gänsefurth, together with the Boderadweg, through the floodplain landscape of the Bodeniederung to the traditional salt town of Staßfurt. Characterized by potash mining and the course of the Bode river, the town offers a variety of interesting and "salty" cultural, leisure and gastronomic attractions. The Strandsolbad or nearby Löderburger See are great places to take a break.
Past the castles and parks of Hohenerxleben and Neugattersleben, the R1 follows the course of the Bode to Nienburg (Saale), where it finally flows into the Saale. The well-preserved monastery church of St. Marien and St. Cyprian of the Nienburg monastery with components from the 11th century is one of the most important early Gothic buildings in the entire central German region.
The Lower Saale Valley Nature Park begins at the confluence of the Bode and Saale rivers, along the edge of which the last few kilometers lead to the stage destination of Bernburg (Saale). The Saale cycle path and many other cycling and hiking routes offer a wide range of excursion options in the contrasting river landscape with its valleys, steep slopes and floodplains.

Magnificent views of the Harz lake district, which was created from an old open-cast lignite mine, can be enjoyed on the R1 European Cycle Route near Hoym, Nachterstedt and Gatersleben. But there was also a lake district here long before that. Today, its history and future give an entire town its name. In addition to Lake Concordia and Lake Königsau, Lake Löderburg and Lake Neugattersleben are also the result of intensive mining in the region.
