Master houses Dessau

Stage Dessau-Roßlau - Lutherstadt Wittenberg

On this stage, the R1 winds its way through a region where world-shaking events began, the artistic avant-garde found a home and an enlightened prince created a treasure trove of garden art. Together with the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, the Luther memorials, the Bauhaus buildings and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom form the heart of the Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg World Heritage Region.

Tour

Route direction

The route through Dessau-Roßlau leads past the Hugo Junkers Museum of Technology, the Bauhaus building and the Masters' Houses, including the ensemble of New Masters' Houses, before meeting the Elbe behind the Georgium Landscape Park with the Anhalt Picture Gallery.
From there, the R1 shares the route with the Elbe Cycle Path as far as Vockerode, which is heralded by a colossal industrial monument. Here, it is advisable to follow the Fürst Franz Garden Realm Tour for a trip to Wörlitz and a visit to the Wörlitz grounds, which rejoins the R1 in Oranienbaum.
At Vockerode, the route detaches itself from the course of the Elbe and meanders along shady forest paths through the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. It is worth stopping here to see the new multimedia exhibition in the Auenhaus information center before continuing towards Oranienbaum. The town, castle and park form a baroque ensemble that is also known as a "little piece of Holland".
Not far away, on a peninsula in Lake Gremmin near Gräfenhainichen, FERROPOLIS, the "City of Iron", forms a sharp contrast to the park and castle splendor of the Garden Kingdom. Five monstrous open-cast mining machines illustrate the dimensions of former lignite mining. Today, the impressive scenery serves as a backdrop for music, art and cultural events of international standing. After the small village of Bergwitz with its idyllic bathing lake, the route leads to Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the most historically significant stop on the R1 in Saxony-Anhalt.

Nature has the last word up to the state border. With rolling hills, extensive forests and hidden villages, the Fläming Nature Park bids farewell to the R1 from Saxony-Anhalt, which merges into the Hoher Fläming Nature Park in Brandenburg. The nature park center in the village of Raben is an R1 service point and provides information about the rest of the route to Berlin.
