Route direction

At Thale, the Harz Mountains bid a spectacular farewell with the legendary Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz granite rock formations. Not only the landscape is unique, but also the variety of leisure and recreational activities on offer. A visit to Wendhusen Monastery in Thalen's old town sets the mood for the following stops on the Romanesque Road.
Not far away in Neinstedt, the Aller-Harz cycle path offers an extremely worthwhile excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Quedlinburg. High Romanesque architecture, medieval treasures, historic half-timbered houses and winding alleyways bring the town of the first German kings and emperors to life. The contrast is provided by a young art scene attracted by the fascination of the unique ambience.
The route continues through the spa town of Bad Suderode. A break in the spa park with its famous healing spring can be wonderfully combined with a visit to neighboring Gernrode. There you will find the almost unchanged collegiate church of St. Cyriakus, which is over a thousand years old. A trip on the Selke Valley Railway is an insider tip among nature and railroad enthusiasts.
Back on the R1, past Rieder and the fairytale Roseburg with its Garden Dream Park, Ballenstedt Castle can be seen from afar. Ballenstedt is regarded as the cradle of Anhalt and can look back on a remarkable and still tangible past. The main attraction is the majestic castle, which houses the burial place of Albrecht the Bear.
The route continues to Meisdorf. There, the Selke Valley and Falkenstein Castle, where legend has it that the "Sachsenspiegel" was written, beckon. The varied route finally ends behind the Romanesque Konradsburg castle near Ermsleben, from where you can catch a beautiful view of the silhouette of the Brocken mountain.

Tipp des Autors

Experience the Rappbode Dam:

The highest dam wall and largest drinking water reservoir in Germany forms the centerpiece of an entire dam system. Since 2017, a structure of superlatives has spanned the reservoir. At 485.5 meters, the Titan RT suspension bridge is one of the longest of its kind in the world and offers a unique view of the Rappbode Valley from a lofty height. Comprehensive information about the dam system and a magnificent view can be found at the Harzer Urania information point.
