Stage Bernburg (Saale) - Dessau-Roßlau
This stage leads through the center of a region that is rich in significant evidence of human thought and creativity. Whether architecture, medicine, jurisprudence, music or literature - progressive thinking and emancipation have shaped the Anhalt region for over eight centuries. Today, the bear, the symbolic animal of Anhalt, proudly adorns the coat of arms of local towns and the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Tour
The journey through the former Duchy of Anhalt, which was formed from the three principalities of Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Köthen and Anhalt-Dessau, begins in the town of Bernburg (Saale). The "Crown of Anhalt", an imposing Renaissance castle whose moat was home to brown bears from 1860, which soon became the unofficial emblem of the town on the Saale, bears witness to its former aristocratic splendor.
Heading out of town, the trail first follows the River Fuhne and leads across flat land to Biendorf. The local castle is home to a unique museum.
In Köthen (Anhalt), the R1 reaches the former workplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, who spent the most creative time of his life here at the invitation of the music-loving Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen. The princely palace, which houses various museums and the event center, forms the central hub of the town.
After almost 12 kilometers through the lake-rich Osternienburger Land, an excursion into medieval legal history follows. The Eike-von-Repgow village of Reppichau is an open-air museum that can be visited and became famous beyond the region with the "Sachsenspiegel" art project.
Nature lovers are recommended to take the designated R1 variant from Reppichau via the water and shipping town of Aken (Elbe), which leads to Dessau-Roßlau via the Elbe Cycle Path and through the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve.
The direct route to the stage destination runs via Mosigkau, whose enchanting rococo castle is a gem in the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Once you arrive in Dessau-Roßlau, the bicycle-friendly Bauhaus town in the Garden Kingdom, it quickly becomes clear that it's worth staying a little longer. In and around Dessau-Roßlau, numerous cycle routes such as the Elbe Cycle Path, the Mulder Cycle Path, the Bauhaus Tour or the Prince Franz Garden Realm Tour invite you to explore the unique symbiosis of modern and neoclassical architecture, palaces and parks.
