Stage Bad Belzig - Potsdam

From the thermal brine spa Bad Belzig, this tour leads via Beelitz-Heilstätten to Havelland, where Fontane was already on the move on his walks. The highlight at the end is the state capital Potsdam with its garden art at the highest level.

The Havelland has not only inspired the writer Theodor Fontane on his walks. Even today, the landscape with its mixture of water, fruit and forests has lost none of its charm. It is the perfect prelude to the stately parks in Potsdam, which combine the landscape features with architecture to create new wholes. This was worth a World Heritage title to UNESCO. This also applies, of course, to the gardens and palaces on the banks of the Havel River in Berlin.

Tour

Route direction

Past mills and through villages it goes from Bad Belzig along the Belziger landscape meadows, the home of the Great Bustard also called "Märkischer Strauß". With a little luck, Europe's flying birds can be observed directly from the R1 European Cycle Route near Baitz. On the flat path primarily through forests Beelitz is reached. The asparagus city has to offer an impressive monument ensemble with the Beelitz sanatoriums, which can be explored from the treetop path also from airy heights.

On the flat path primarily through forests Beelitz-Heilstätten is reached. It is worth a detour to the asparagus town. Further, the Europaradweg leads without accompanying traffic through the forests of the Zauche to the shore of Lake Schwielow. Here in Havelland, Fontane was not the only one to be enchanted by the unique atmosphere of the Havel lakes. The painter's village of Ferch attracted romantics as early as the 19th century. In Petzow, the R1 touches the orchard of Berlin around the Havel city of Werder.

Naturally on the shore of a lake, the state capital Potsdam is reached. Sanssouci Palace and Park are the best-known representatives of the local UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the former residential city has much more to offer. For example, the well-traveled cyclist can remember the beginning of the bike tour in the Netherlands in the Dutch Quarter.

Tipp des Autors

The flower city Werder (Havel)

Werder (Havel) is one of the most popular destinations in the state of Brandenburg. The historic old town on the island, the Havel landscape, the fruit and wine-growing tradition and the proximity to Berlin and Potsdam attract hundreds of thousands of guests to the blossom city every year. The European Cycle Route R1 leads directly through the district of Petzow. A detour to the old town island a few kilometers further west is worthwhile.
