Luisium Palace and Park

Luisium Palace and Park

Prince Franz von Anhalt-Dessau had the small Luisium country house built as a private residence for his wife Louise from 1774 to 1778.

The neoclassical country estate of Princess Louise von Anhalt-Dessau appears today to be the most idyllic of the grounds between Dessau and Wörlitz. Luisium Palace is one of Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff's most beautiful architectural creations in the Garden Kingdom. The small rooms and cabinets of the enchanting country house are decorated with graceful neoclassical wall and ceiling paintings and ornate stucco work. They make the former retreat of the princess so unique. Due to the painting of allegorical scenes in the ballroom, the palace was referred to by contemporaries as the "temple of female virtues".

The building stands on a flood-free hill and is surrounded by an English landscape garden. Here you will find a series of neo-Gothic and neoclassical garden architectures such as the "snake house", the gatehouses and the ruined arch. The garden is divided into two parts by a main avenue. From the very beginning, the eastern half was used commercially and used for fruit and vegetable growing. The close interweaving of the useful and the pleasant is particularly impressive here. To this day, horses enliven the landscape of the original foal pasture in the neighborhood of the Luisium.
