Buckow - "Pearl of the Märkische Schweiz".
In the today's Kneipp health resort in the nature park Märkische Switzerland already Berthold Brecht and Helene Weigel spent their summers.
Described by Theodor Fontane as the 'Pearl of Märkische Schweiz' and only 50 km from Berlin, Buckow has been popular with Berlin celebrities since the turn of the century, who came here for peace and inspiration. With its deep valleys, turquoise-blue lakes and vast meadows and fields, alpine-looking Buckow is a recognized Kneipp spa with several natural water treading spots and a Kneipp herb garden at the castle park. Berthold Brecht and Helene Weigel also spent their summers here. And they did so in an old Wilhelminian style villa directly on Schermützelsee. The studio house and the theater shed have been used as a museum and memorial since 1977. In addition to several works by the sculptor Georg Roch, the garden also contains five copper plates with excerpts from the 'Buckower Elegies'. Brecht's epic concept is considered a breakthrough in the international theater world, and his universal plays are still performed worldwide.
