Festung Küstrin

Küstrin Fortress on the Oder

Fortress Küstrin was a fortress, which was the scene of many European wars.

Strategically located at the confluence of the Oder and Warta rivers, Küstrin was the scene of many European wars. In the 16th century, Johann von Brandenburg chose Küstrin as the residential town of his principality of Neumark and had one of the most modern fortresses of the time built, the Küstrin Fortress. Completed in 1568, the oldest regiment of the Brandenburg-Prussian army was formed here. Once Renaissance castle, parish church and a historical old town center characterized Küstrin's interior. After the complete destruction during the Second World War in 1945, the ruins were left to themselves. Today they are overgrown with wild vegetation and have only park-like character. Since the 1990s, the fortress complex is now restored in parts, so that fragments such as Fort Gorgast or the Berlin Gate can be visited.
